City Drastically Reduces Intake Hours at Shelters
[July 1, 2009] In the boneheaded move of the year, the City has decided to drastically reduce drop-off hours at City shelters. This comes just days before the Fourth of July, their busiest week-end of the year, when many animals run away after being frightened by fireworks. Intake hours have long been 24 hours/day, but they're now shortened to the office hours of 9:30 am - 6 pm (Eastside) and 7 am - 7 pm (Westside). People finding strays the other 12+ hours of the day are directed to call 311 and ask that an Animal Control officer be sent to their home. This is a huge mistake that will cost dogs' lives. Tell the mayor that this is wrong and to change it. He can be reached at 768-3000 or by e-mail at mayor@cabq.gov.

City Helps Low-income Families with Dog Food
[June 22, 2009] KOB is reporting that the City of Albuquerque, in an effort to stem the tide of animals being surrendered due to lack of funds and/or work, will begin offering free food for the animals leaving with down-on-their luck families.

Meet Other Dog Lovers with Tail Date
[June 8, 2009] People often ask how to meet other dog lovers and Animal Humane's new Tail Date group does just that -- it introduces you to other dog-minded folks for fun and socializing for you and your dog. Launch party is Sunday, June 14th, 2 pm, Gecko's on Academy.

Let Fido Fly First Class!

[May 30, 2009] Just in time for Summer, we found out about Pet Airways, an animal-only airline where your beloved pooch flies in the main compartment, not in cargo. With great prices and an on-flight attendant, which checks on "pawsengers" every fifteen minutes, Pet Airways sounds like the perfect way to take your dog with you on vacation.

What Local Pet Store Supports Puppy Mills?
Tell Petland to Stop Supporting Puppy Mills [May 21, 2009] Rio Rancho's Petland is America's largest chain of puppy-selling pet stores and the nation's largest retail supporter of puppy mills.

Not only does this encourage the most horrendous abuse to the breeding dogs, but the puppies created by these overbred dogs are often sickly and short-lived. Get more information at the Humane Society's Petland Campaign website.

Dog-Friendly Ways to Celebrate Earth (and every) Day
[April 20, 2009] April 22nd is Earth Day and we received these excellent tips from Ann Beyke, Pet Loss Counselor:

Take a quick inventory of your dogs' toys, food, and treats to find some easy ways to leave a lighter pawprint:
  • Look for toys using recycled products and made in the U.S.A. Tie old socks together for the ultimate pull toy!
  • Bake your own dog treats.
  • Plant a tree for your pooch.
  • Baking soda and distilled white vinegar make great cleaning products that cost just pennies. Use a little baking soda for a "dry bath" - massage into your dogs' fur and brush out after a few minutes.
  • Recycle pet food cans.
  • Update the old joke, "How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb?" to "How many dogs does it take to change a CF bulb?" Although compact flourescent bulbs (CFCs) cost a bit more initially, they save a lot of money in the long-run because they last much longer and produce much less heat.

NM Animal Friends Extends Spay/Neuter Program
[March 17, 2009] In addition to providing low cost spay/neuter services for cats and dogs belonging to low-income families, NMAF is now providing these services at a slightly higher co-pay cost for cats belonging to lower middle-income families. (Dog spay/neuter assistance is still available to low-income pet owners).

Profitability of Greyhounds Their Only Concern
[February 13, 2009] Do racing greyhgounds really live a life of luxury, with daily massages and "fussing over," as a recent letter to the Albuquerque Journal claimed? Unfortunately, this fairytale existence couldn't be further from the truth.

Instead of intense, hands-on treatment, these beautiful animals are often starved, neglected, then shoved into crates to be shuttled from racetrack to racetrack around the world. Like puppy mills, the greyhound racing industry has no incentive to care for their animals when they're no longer profitable. Both groups then dump their unsocialized and fearful animals on overworked rescue groups, to pick up the pieces of their broken lives.

Exploitive industries do not police themselves, as the letter states. Instead they hide behind racing-supported "rescue groups" which try to adopt out the very problem dogs they create. Check out the websites of the ASPCA and Humane Society of the United States, which calls greyhound racing animal abuse, along with many others calling for the end of this greedy and heartless industry.

Why The Journal chose to print such a far-fetched letter is a mystery, but don't be fooled by their well-funded propaganda. Like dog fighters and puppy mill owners, this industry is only interested in making a buck and doesn't care who or what they hurt to do it.
